The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two plans illustrate the before and after designs of a college cafe.
Overall, the college cafe had major improvements compared to its original layout and design. In the part, limited amenities and divisions were observed, while at the present, upgrades were included and additional seatings were added.
In the orginal plan, the bin is next to the toilet near the entrance. In the middle of the hall, tables and chairs were found. Next to them were two staff dining areas. In the futher end, a door would lead to the serving area (all food and drink) and the kitchen.
In the present plan, the bin was replaced by a recycling bin. Next to the toilet, additional doors were added in both sides. These doors would lead to an outdoor seating and a barbecue stand in the corner. Same with the original layout, the chairs and tables were in the middle of the hall. Although the staff dining rooms were converted into two separate areas: for take away food and a coffee bar. Another addition was also the salad bar which was situated in the farthest end of the hall next to the door that would lead to the kitchen and now, hot meal stand.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You have provided a clear overview and compared the 'before' and 'after' states effectively. You covered the key changes, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, the barbecue stand, and the conversion of the staff dining areas. To reach a higher band, ensure that you group information more logically to highlight the most significant changes rather than just listing them chronologically. For instance, grouping all 'new additions' versus 'structural changes' would provide a more analytical summary of the information provided in the plans.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the plans. You use basic cohesive devices like 'In the original plan' and 'In the present plan' to guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother. Some of your referencing is slightly repetitive, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in contrast,' to better show the relationship between the old and new layouts.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'amenities,' 'converted,' and 'situated.' There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'seatings' (which is uncountable) and 'futher end' (a spelling error for 'further'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Incorporating more specific descriptive language related to architectural changes or spatial arrangements would enhance your score. Ensure you check for common spelling errors and word forms to avoid minor inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'In the part' (likely meant 'In the past'), 'in both sides' (should be 'on both sides'), and 'Same with the original layout' (should be 'As with the original layout'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy, particularly regarding prepositions and comparative phrases.
