Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram provides the floor plans of college cafe before and after it was redesigned.

Overall, the serving area which was earlier at a single place, now different places serve different food items. A new outdoor seating is created and a barbeque is added next to it.

Firstly, the location of kitchen and toilets have not changed in the new design plan. The bin has been replaced by larger recycling bins. The chains and tables in the center of cafe have not been changed. A new salad bar is added on the left side of the center hall.

The earlier serving area next to the kitchen that served all food and drink items, now only serves hot meals. The rooms which were used by the staff for dining are now converted to a coffee bar and take away section. The outdoor seating is created with 5 tables and a barbecue station is added next to them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, seating, and new additions like the salad bar and coffee area. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For example, while you mention the kitchen location has not changed, you could have explicitly contrasted the size or layout of the seating area more effectively. The report is accurate and addresses all parts of the prompt, though it lacks a slightly higher level of detail in describing the spatial relationships between the new features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'now', and 'earlier' helps the reader follow the progression of changes. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined to ensure a smoother flow between the description of the interior and the exterior. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'redesigned', 'converted', and 'barbeque station'. There is an attempt to use specific terminology related to the floor plan. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'chains' instead of 'chairs' and 'at a single place' which is slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive verbs to avoid repetition of words like 'added' or 'changed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the location of kitchen and toilets have not changed' (should be 'has') and 'The chains and tables in the center of cafe' (missing an article). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally functional. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of articles when referring to specific areas of the floor plan.
