Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plans illustrate how a college cafe look before the redevelopment and how it looks now. Overall, the plan become significantly more developed, with several new features being introduced while some excisting features were removed. Regarding the northern and central parts of the plan, a kitchen was located at the north-west corner, whereas serving area was below the kitchen. After redesigning, kitchen remained unchanged, and serving area was converted into hot meals. In addtion, staff dining rooms that were situated at the center of the cafe have been replaced by take away and coffee bar. A new salad bar has been made on the west of the cafe, and in the north-east a bin was transformed into recycling bins. Turning to the southern parts of the plan, toilets remained untouched after redesigning of the cafe, whereas outdoor seating were added that were located at the bottom of cafe. Area for barbecue was also added in the todays plan. Notably, all the southern parts of the cafe before redesigning was empty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the plans, including the kitchen, serving area, dining facilities, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue area. The overview is clear and highlights the main changes effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in the description; for instance, the student states the kitchen remained unchanged, but the plan shows it was expanded. Additionally, the claim that the southern part was 'empty' before is inaccurate as the toilets were present. Despite these minor factual slips, the main trends are well-summarised and the response is fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised, moving from the northern/central areas to the southern parts. Paragraphing is used to separate these sections, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'In addition', 'Turning to', and 'whereas' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the vague use of 'the plan' when referring to the physical layout. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'redevelopment', 'converted', 'transformed', and 'situated' used appropriately. There are some spelling errors, such as 'excisting' (existing) and 'addtion' (addition), and some awkward phrasing like 'in the todays plan'. While the range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. The student successfully uses topic-specific vocabulary related to the cafe layout, which supports the overall clarity of the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('a college cafe look', 'outdoor seating were added', 'all the southern parts... was empty') and missing articles ('a kitchen was located', 'serving area was converted'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, but the attempt to use a variety of sentence patterns is evident. More attention to basic agreement and article usage would improve the score.
