Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it is only 95 words long. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the student attempts to identify some features of the cafe redesign, the description is incomplete and ends abruptly mid-sentence ('In addition to that dust bins'). The lack of a full summary and the failure to complete the report significantly impact the ability to cover all parts of the task effectively. To improve, the student must ensure they provide a comprehensive overview and complete all sentences to fully describe the visual information provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response shows some attempt at organization with an introductory sentence and a paragraph break. However, the progression is severely hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Cohesive devices such as 'overall' and 'firstly' are used, but the abrupt ending makes the overall structure feel disjointed. Paragraphing is present but not fully utilized due to the lack of sufficient content. To improve, the student should focus on completing their thoughts and using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as 'added', 'new', and 'redesign'. There are also several spelling errors, including 'feature' instead of 'features', 'resturants' instead of 'restaurants', and 'licated' instead of 'located'. The range of vocabulary is limited, which restricts the ability to describe the changes in the cafe with precision. To improve, the student should practice using more descriptive verbs and nouns related to spatial changes and facility upgrades, while also paying closer attention to spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect clarity. Examples include 'the college added several feature' (pluralization error), 'redesigning' used incorrectly as a noun, and 'boarder' instead of 'border'. The sentence structure is simple, and the final sentence is incomplete, which prevents the demonstration of complex grammatical structures. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct word forms, and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and predicate to maintain grammatical integrity.
