Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by identifying key changes, such as the addition of a salad bar and outdoor seating. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1. The description is somewhat repetitive and relies on listing features rather than synthesizing the information. While the main features are mentioned, the lack of a formal structure and a clear introductory overview limits the development of the response. To improve, ensure you group information logically and provide a concise summary of the most significant changes at the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Now', the overall flow is mechanical and disjointed. The referencing is often unclear, and the lack of clear logical organization between the 'before' and 'after' states hinders the reader's understanding. To improve, you should organize your report into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Using a wider variety of linking words to connect comparisons would also enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic phrasing such as 'there is' or 'in place of'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'in after design' and 'in a line of cafe'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. To improve, try to use more descriptive verbs and nouns related to spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'replaced by', 'relocated', or 'extended', and avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the cafe'), prepositions ('in the left wall'), and verb forms ('includle'). Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence variety. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas and the use of capitalization. These errors occasionally impede the flow of reading. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles. Practicing the use of complex sentences, such as those using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, will also help increase your score.
