The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The image shows the numerous changes in a college cafe before and after the renovation.

The first picture shows the map of cafe before it was recreated. There were separate gates for entry and exit. And also, there was bin on the left side of the main entrance. Along with this, there was a restroom in the corner. There was an arrangement of table of chairs in the centre of the cafe. However, there was also separate dining rooms for the staff. Additionally, there was a large kitchen on the corner of north-west which was rectangular in shape, and also a serving area which is in front of the kitchen where all types of foods and drinks were served.

The second picture shows several changes in the cafe. There is outdoor seating available for the college students along with the barbeque. In contrast, the option of take away food is also available now with coffee bar just adjacent to the takeaway food shop. Moreover, one additional bar is open for the salad. Not only that, but also a hot meal shop opposite to the kitchen. Also, there are recycling bins instead of bin.

Overall, the image shows some differences in the cafe which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the addition of outdoor seating, new food counters, and the removal of the staff dining area. However, the report lacks a clear overview that synthesises the most significant trends, such as the shift towards a more diverse, customer-focused layout. While the description is generally accurate, some details are slightly repetitive, and the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more analytical rather than just listing features. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the transformation's purpose rather than just listing individual changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for the 'before' and 'after' states, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing could be improved; for instance, the transition between the kitchen description and the serving area in the first paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the information is easy to follow, but the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the layout and changes effectively. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'renovation' and 'adjacent'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'recreated' instead of 'redesigned' or 'renovated', and 'hot meal shop' which is not the most precise term for a food counter. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical variety is not yet broad enough to demonstrate the flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'map of cafe' (missing article), 'table of chairs' (awkward collocation), and 'on the corner of north-west' (preposition error). There are also minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout. While the errors do not impede communication, the control over complex structures is not consistent enough to warrant a higher score. Increasing the variety of sentence types while focusing on accurate preposition and article usage would improve the score.
