The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The presented plan illustrates the information about collage cafe, and it was reconstructed and how it looks modern.
Overall, before redesigning the collage cafe it had only few facilities, like staff dining room, toilets, kitchen, etc. However, it looks more modern with adding new amenities.
Before redesign the cafe, entrance and exit have been right side of the building. Dustbin and toilets have near the entrance. Kitchen and serving area situated north-west side of staff dining room. Some chairs and tables were placed middle of the cafe.
After redesign the cafe, it has new amenities. Added a barbecue counter for costumer with bottom side of the cafe. Staff dining room now became a Coffee bar room and constructed food take away counter for costumer.
Also added a salad bar for those who on diet. Kitchen area is stay same it is but in kitchen area added a Hot meals counter. Dustbin replaced with recycling bins.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the coffee bar, salad bar, and barbecue counter. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main changes are identified, the spatial relationships are described in a fragmented way, such as 'bottom side of the cafe' or 'north-west side', which are not always precise. To reach a higher band, you should focus on grouping information more logically (e.g., structural changes vs. new facilities) and providing a more cohesive summary of the overall transformation rather than just listing changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'Before redesign' and 'After redesign' are used to start paragraphs, but the internal flow between sentences is often disjointed. For example, the transition between describing the kitchen and the recycling bins is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensuring that pronouns or referencing words clearly link back to previous ideas would significantly improve the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple descriptors like 'new amenities' and 'stay same'. There are also some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'collage cafe' (likely a spelling error for 'college') and 'for costumer' (should be 'customers'). The use of 'bottom side' is not standard academic terminology for describing a floor plan. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to spatial descriptions, such as 'situated in the southern section', 'replaced by', or 'underwent a transformation'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('in kitchen area', 'at right side'), incorrect verb tenses ('Kitchen area is stay same'), and awkward phrasing ('it was reconstructed and how it looks modern'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for articles and verb forms would be highly beneficial.
