The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram given below illustrates the outlook of a cafe before and after it was redesigned.
Overall, the cafe has been significantly modernized. Several new food and drink facilities have been added, the staff dining room have been removed, and an outdoor seating area has been introduced, while the kitchen and toilets remained in the same locations.
Before the renovation, customers could order all the food and drinks from a single serving area connected to the kitchen. There were also two staff dining rooms in the center of the cafe. The rest of the indoor space was occupied by tables and chairs. In addition, bin and toilets were located on the right corner of the entrance.
After the redesign, the serving area was replaced by separate section of hot meals. Take away food and coffee bar was replaced by staff dining rooms. Whereas a salad bar and barbecue were added along the left wall. Furthermore, outdoor seating area was built at the entrance of the cafe. Finally, the bin was replaced by the recycling bins, while toilets remained in the same location.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of new facilities and the removal of the staff dining rooms. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the changes. You have also made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurate; for instance, you mentioned the kitchen remained in the same location, which is correct, but ensure your descriptions of the new layout are precise. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively and provided a clear, logical summary of the visual information provided in the diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the 'before' and 'after' states. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the changes. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For example, the shift between the description of the serving area and the staff dining rooms in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, making the information easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernized', 'redesigned', and 'occupied'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'separate section of hot meals' (which should be 'a separate section') and 'bin and toilets were located on the right corner' (which should be 'in the right corner'). While you attempt to use specific vocabulary related to the cafe layout, some word choices are slightly repetitive or could be more precise. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring articles are used correctly would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the staff dining room have been removed' should be 'has been removed') and missing articles ('bin and toilets' should be 'the bin and the toilets'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like pluralization and article usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control over your grammar.
