The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two plans compare the layout of the college cafe before and after its redesign.
Overall, it can be seen that the cafe has become more modernized and improved its ambience. The cafe has also introduced the concept of an open-roof seating area. It can also be observed that specialized counters have been introduced for individuals to enjoy meals.
In the earlier design, there was only one entrance for the cafe, but now it has increased to three entrances. The serving area is replaced by the hot meals. A new counter has been added as a salad bar located on the left side of the cafe. The staff dining area has now been converted and split into two different stalls known as takeaway food and a coffee bar.
The single bin, which was in the previous design, has now been replaced with recycling bins. The cafe has also included a barbecue counter. The outdoor seating area has also been introduced in front of the barbecue counter so that a large number of people can be seated in the cafe at the same time. Whereas the existing kitchen area and toilets remained unchanged, tables and chairs have remained at the center of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the changes to entrances, the serving area, and the addition of new facilities like the barbecue counter and outdoor seating. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the plans. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more direct comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states rather than just listing changes. For example, instead of saying 'the serving area is replaced', you could explicitly contrast the previous single serving area with the new specialized counters to highlight the shift in layout more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary of changes. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the redesign, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You used some cohesive devices like 'whereas' and 'in the earlier design' to connect ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to show relationships between the changes, such as 'consequently' or 'in addition to'. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'modernized', 'ambience', 'specialized', and 'converted'. These terms are appropriate for the context of describing a floor plan. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to avoid repetition of words like 'cafe' and 'area'. For instance, using 'facility', 'establishment', or 'layout' would add more variety and precision to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrated a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is sufficient for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing, such as 'the serving area is replaced by the hot meals' (which should be 'replaced by a hot meals counter') and 'the outdoor seating area has also been introduced' (where 'also' is slightly redundant). Despite these minor slips, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a solid grasp of tense usage when comparing past and present states.
