Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map demonstrates a college cafe layout before and after renovation and how it looks like now.

Examining the details of the planning of a college cafe before redesigning, there was ample space. It was situated in an L-shaped structure in which the kitchen, a serving area where all food and drinks were served to the students as well as a staff dining room are covered two rooms. There was plenty of place for tables and chairs.

After renovation, significant changes occurred. The new area was introduced on the eastern side with barbecue facilities with outdoor seating. There was some space converted for other purposes a staff dining room converted into a takeaway food and a coffee bar. The size of recycling bin had been expanded. The number of doors has been increased near toilets and the barbecue area. The salad bar was built on the left side of the wall. The serving area was replaced by hot meals. The kitchen as well as toilets remained the same.

Overall, the cafe depicts significant changes on its design as well as some new amenities included such as the barbecue, a salad bar, a coffee bar and hot meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe renovation, including the addition of the barbecue area, the conversion of the staff room, and the new layout of the serving area. You provided a clear overview in the final paragraph. However, the response lacks precision in describing the spatial relationships. For instance, stating the kitchen 'remained the same' is accurate, but you could have better highlighted the contrast between the static areas and the dynamic changes. To reach a higher band, ensure you group information more logically rather than listing changes sequentially, which can make the report feel like a simple list of observations rather than a comparative analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. You use some cohesive devices such as 'After renovation' and 'Overall', which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between describing the kitchen and the staff room could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disconnected. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovation', 'amenities', and 'converted'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'the kitchen... are covered two rooms' is awkward and grammatically unclear. Additionally, 'the map demonstrates' is slightly inaccurate as the visual is a 'plan' or 'floor plan'. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing layouts, such as 'situated in the north-east corner' or 'underwent a transformation'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'how it looks like now' (should be 'what it looks like now'), 'are covered two rooms' (incorrect verb usage), and 'the size of recycling bin' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the accuracy of your writing.
