The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans depict changes made after renovation in cafe located in the college.
Overall, initial design of the cafe was simple, and a lot of areas were not utilized, which can be seen after redesign that the cafe was modernized, and all the spaces were used appropriately making it attractive for students to visit.
The cafe before redesigned appeared to be with basic instances which include a large hall for tables and chairs to be seated by visitors and towards the end there is a waste bin and toilets constructed. Adjacent to it there was a spacious area for staff dining rooms. Towards the other side of the end there is a kitchen connecting to serving area for all food and drinks.
However, the new designed cafe was more alike to bistro, where we can find light meals and drinks. In the cafe the kitchen remained same but with new counter for hot meals attached to it. The main hall were visitors sit included with salad bar, coffee bar and take away food sections replacing staff dining rooms. Toilets and recycling bins were not replaced, but there was an interesting outdoor seating arrangement with a barbecue counter which may attract students and also provide more sitting space without overcrowding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the cafe plans, including the layout changes and the addition of new facilities. You successfully identify the main trends, such as the modernization of the space and the introduction of the outdoor seating area. However, the overview is slightly descriptive rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most significant changes—such as the conversion of the staff dining area into specialized food sections—more clearly. The comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states is generally effective, though some details, like the kitchen remaining the same, are stated clearly, which is good practice for Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of information is clear, moving from the general layout to specific changes. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Adjacent to it', to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'The cafe before redesigned' is slightly awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus will help improve the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovation', 'modernized', 'arrangement', and 'overcrowding'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'basic instances' and 'more alike to bistro', which slightly hinder the precision of your description. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to describing maps or plans, such as 'transformed into', 'replaced by', or 'situated in the corner'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in cafe located' (missing article), 'before redesigned' (should be 'before it was redesigned'), and 'The main hall were visitors sit' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. Attempting more complex sentence structures, such as using passive voice to describe the changes (e.g., 'The staff dining area was replaced by...'), would also demonstrate better control.
