The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagrams illustrate the plan of a college cafe before and after being renovated. The first diagram focuses on the old design of the cafe, while the second one depicts the cafe today.
From the first glance of the plans, it is abundantly clear that no ammendments have been made to the position of the kitchen. Next, a new salad bar has been introduced on the extreme left of the cafe. It can also be noticed that the serving area for all foods and drinks has now been converted to a section for hot meals.
Furthermore, the staff dining rooms have been redesigned into a place for take-away food and a coffee bar. The tables and chairs remain in the same place in the centre of the cafe. Although the location of toilets and dustbins has not changed, the old bins have been replaced by recycling bins. Moreover, a new barbecue section has been added outside the cafe on the left. In addition to this, outdoor seating arrangements have also been introduced.
Overall, the main infrastructure such as the kitchen and the restrooms have not changed. Instead, new features like a coffee bar, salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating have been incorporated in the new plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers the requirements of the task. You have identified the main features of the cafe before and after the redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, the conversion of the serving area, and the new outdoor features. The comparison between the two plans is clear and logical. You have successfully highlighted what remained unchanged (kitchen, toilets) and what was modified or added. The overview provided in the final paragraph is a strong summary of the key changes, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1. The information is accurate and well-selected, providing a comprehensive summary of the visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the internal changes, the external/additional changes, and the summary. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition to this', and 'Overall' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the report. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the old and new plans is clearly articulated throughout the text, making the report easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'renovated', 'amendments', 'converted', and 'incorporated'. The vocabulary is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There is one minor spelling error ('ammendments' should be 'amendments'), but this does not impede communication. You demonstrate a good ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to floor plans and facility changes. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the spatial changes, but the current range is already quite effective for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. You have used passive voice appropriately to describe the changes (e.g., 'have been introduced', 'have been replaced'), which is suitable for this type of report. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the structures are functional and clear, there is room to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms to demonstrate greater flexibility, but the current control is solid and supports clear communication without any significant errors.
