Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plans illustrate the layout of a college café before and after its refurbishment.

Overall, the café was significantly modernised after the redesign. While the kitchen and toilets remained in the same locations, several new facilities, including a coffee bar, takeaway food counter, salad bar, barbecue area, outdoor seating, and recycling bins, were introduced, whereas the serving area and staff dining rooms were removed.

Before the refurbishment, the kitchen was situated in the north-western corner, with a serving area offering all food and drinks directly below it. Two staff dining rooms were located in the centre of the café, while the remaining space was occupied by tables and chairs. A small bin was placed near the entrance on the eastern side, and the toilets were positioned in the south-east corner.

Following the refurbishment, the kitchen remained unchanged, although the serving area was converted into a hot meals section. The two staff dining rooms were replaced by a takeaway food counter and a coffee bar. In addition, a salad bar and a barbecue area were added on the western side, while an outdoor seating area was created along the southern side of the café. Finally, the small bin was replaced with larger recycling bins, whereas the toilets remained in their original position.
