Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps illustrate a college cafe before and after it was redesigned to add new amenities and a new dining area.

Overall, the cafe's area got expanded after the redesign. The cafe started serving different type of food such as salad, take away and coffee. Staff's private dining rooms were transitioned and the staff no longer has designated dining rooms.

In the west section of the cafe, a new salad bar was introduced for students who are trying to eat healthy. A new outdoor seating was built in the south of the cafe along with a barbecue in the south east corner for students that want to eat out in the fresh air. The staff dining rooms were refashioned to a coffee bar and take away food stall for the students which preferred to eat else where.

The kitchen discontinued to serve food and drinks and now prepare hot meals exclusively but the kitchen area remained the same otherwise. As students should be taught to protect the environment and learn about recycling. A bigger recycling bin replaced the previous trash bin. The toilet in the south east, did not change over time and remained the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and the conversion of staff rooms. You provide a clear overview and make relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the report includes some subjective interpretation not present in the visual data, such as assuming students want to 'eat healthy' or 'protect the environment'. In Task 1, you must stick strictly to the factual information provided in the diagrams. Additionally, ensure you focus on the spatial changes rather than speculating on the motivations behind the redesign to improve your accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the west section' and 'along with', to guide the reader. However, the progression between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the kitchen description and the recycling bin is abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus. The paragraphing is appropriate, which helps the overall readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'amenities', 'transitioned', and 'refashioned'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'discontinued to serve' (should be 'ceased serving') and 'preferred to eat else where' (should be 'elsewhere'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary remains formal and objective, avoiding conversational phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'different type of food' should be 'different types of food', and 'students that want' should be 'students who want'. Additionally, there is a sentence fragment: 'As students should be taught to protect the environment and learn about recycling.' This should be connected to the following sentence. While these errors rarely impede meaning, they are frequent enough to limit your score in this criterion.
