Student answer (Band 6.0)

The blueprints illustrate an institution's cafe previous and current design framework.

overall, the cafe was modernized, and the concentrated serving area was divided and relocated in many different parts. the sitting area and garbage collection areas were expanded.

prominent new editions in today's cafe from the previous design are salad bar at the left side of the cafe, to its south a gate was added leading to barbeque and outdoor seating. the old serving area containing all foods and drinks was distributed into the above-mentioned spaces and was now used only for serving hot meals prepared from the kitchen just behind.

furthermore, the cafe removed reserved spaces for the staff dining room and restructured them into new additions namely, coffee bar and take away foods. garbage collectors were also expanded facilitating easier and more waste management. kitchen, tables and chairs are present as they were from the previous design.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the new salad bar, outdoor seating, and the reconfiguration of the serving area. However, the response falls just short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the key changes are identified, the description of the layout could be more precise; for example, the mention of 'garbage collectors' is slightly inaccurate as the plan shows a waste disposal area. The overview is present but could be more detailed to fully capture the extent of the transformation. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed with sufficient detail to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Cohesive devices such as 'furthermore' and 'overall' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and minor punctuation errors, such as the lack of capitalisation at the start of sentences (e.g., 'overall', 'prominent', 'furthermore'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band score. Improving sentence-level cohesion and ensuring consistent capitalisation will enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of the changes. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'modernized', 'restructured', and 'facilitating'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'new editions' instead of 'additions' or 'features', and 'garbage collectors' instead of 'waste disposal area'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, which limits the range. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to architectural plans and spatial descriptions, and ensure that word choices are contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and some awkward article usage (e.g., 'salad bar at the left side'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The use of passive voice is appropriate for describing changes in a layout, but the control over sentence structure is inconsistent. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors like capitalisation and subject-verb agreement will help improve the accuracy of the writing.
