Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps show the structural developments that took place in college cafe of before and today's design.

The area went to dramatic transformation from a largely college cafe area into a modern redesigned cafe. The most notable modification was the total clearance of staff dining rooms to make way for new stalls.

In previous design, the northern part of the area featured couple or staff dining rooms and serving area of all food and drinks. But now, staff dining rooms had been completely demolished and replaced by take away food and Coffee bar and serving area converted into hot meals section. Adjacent to this, empty area in right side was extended to include Salad bar.

Turning to the southern region, outside area, which originally stood in the south, was converted into Outdoor seating with 5 tables. Furthermore, a new Barbecue and 2 inside and outside door was constructed to the east and west of Outdoor seating.

Kitchen and toilets was left untouched throughout the entire period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the removal of staff dining rooms and the addition of new facilities like the barbecue and salad bar. You have made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'now' states. However, the report could be improved by providing a more cohesive overview in the introduction. While you mention the 'dramatic transformation', a more detailed summary of the key changes—such as the shift toward a more customer-focused layout—would strengthen the response. You have covered all parts of the task well, and the information is accurate based on the provided plans.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the northern area to the southern region. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different sections of the cafe. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Turning to', 'Furthermore', and 'Adjacent to', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'empty area in right side' lacks a definite article, and the connection between sentences could be more fluid to achieve a higher band score. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'structural developments', 'demolished', 'converted', and 'redesigned'. These terms are appropriate for a task of this nature. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The area went to dramatic transformation' (should be 'underwent') and 'in right side' (should be 'on the right side'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more precise descriptive adjectives would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use passive voice ('had been completely demolished', 'was converted'), there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'Kitchen and toilets was left untouched' (should be 'were') and missing articles, such as 'featured couple or staff dining rooms' (should be 'a couple of'). These errors are frequent but do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
