The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The cafe designs illustrate the change happened to the cafe's layout. They show how the cafe has been redesigned by not demolishing or changing the physical structure of the building, instead, they just reaallocated some of the space and rooms.

Overall, the cafe had a few changes, including the place which served everything changed to only serving hot meals, staff dining rooms were changed to take away food and coffee bar, and there wasn't any outdoor sitting in the old design while the new design doesn't have staff dining area.

The new design has well structured layout, the food which is cooked inside the kitchen can be eaten inside with salad bar at one end and recycling bin besides toilet. For Barbeque, they have seperate outdoor sitting, but ofcourse both dining areas can be used by anyone.

In contrast, the old design didn't had any outdoor sitting at all and all the food, whether it's Barbeque or kitchen cooked food, was served at one place which obviously will cause customer traffic to be at one single point.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of outdoor seating and the reconfiguration of service areas. However, the description of the changes is somewhat imprecise. For instance, stating that 'staff dining rooms were changed to take away food and coffee bar' is a bit vague, and the analysis of the 'salad bar' and 'recycling bin' lacks a clear spatial context relative to the original layout. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the two plans could be more systematic and detailed to fully meet the requirements of a Band 7 or higher. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated into the structure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'For Barbeque, they have...' and 'In contrast, the old design didn't had...'. The transition between the general overview and the specific details is functional but could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical flow between sentences occasionally feels disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the description of the new layout is somewhat cluttered.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes in the cafe. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'reallocated' and 'demolishing', which are used correctly. However, there are also instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'well structured layout' (missing an article) and 'besides toilet' (should be 'beside the toilet'). The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'the change happened to' (should be 'the changes that happened to'), 'didn't had' (should be 'didn't have'), and 'ofcourse' (spelling). Additionally, there are issues with article usage, such as 'with salad bar' and 'at one point'. The control of grammar is inconsistent, and while the meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score to a Band 6.
