The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates what the college cafe looked like before its redesign and how it looks now.
Overall, many changes happened during the period of time of the cafe renovation, including major changes in the outside seating area and staff dining room, which were converted in take away food and coffee bar.
Before the cafe redesign, there was a serving area on the western side, which was converted into a hot meals area. However, the kitchen remained the same. Moreover, the staff dining rooms were converted into a coffee bar and takeaway food area and recycle bin was located on the eastern side of the cafe area.
However, there was an outdoor seating area constructed in the southern part of the cafe along with a barbecue area on the west side. Therefore, the salad bar was built on the west part of the cafe, and the toilets remained the same as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the staff dining room and the addition of outdoor seating. However, the report lacks precision in describing the spatial layout. For instance, stating that the serving area was 'converted into a hot meals area' is clear, but the description of the 'recycle bin' location is slightly confusing, and the overall summary could be more analytical regarding the flow of the cafe. While the main features are addressed, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more systematically structured to ensure the reader fully grasps the transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas. However, the use of 'Therefore' in the final paragraph is logically weak, as the construction of an outdoor seating area does not logically follow from the previous sentence about the kitchen. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is generally clear, but the connection between the various changes could be smoother to improve the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of the changes. You use terms like 'redesign', 'renovation', and 'converted' appropriately. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'converted in take away food', which should be 'converted into a takeaway food area'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', 'partitioned', or 'transformed', rather than relying heavily on 'converted' and 'remained'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'converted in take away food' contains a preposition error, and 'recycle bin was located' lacks an article ('a' or 'the'). There is also a slight issue with subject-verb agreement and article usage throughout the text. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent article usage and correct prepositional phrases will improve your accuracy.
