Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified the main features of the redesign, such as the new salad bar, outdoor seating, and the relocation of the kitchen, the analysis is somewhat superficial. You have not fully developed the comparisons between the two plans, and the lack of a clear overview paragraph makes it difficult to grasp the main trends at a glance. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the most significant changes in an introductory overview and ensure you meet the minimum length requirement to allow for a more thorough exploration of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is written as a single block of text, which lacks the necessary paragraphing to guide the reader through the information logically. There is a lack of cohesive devices; sentences are often linked in a mechanical or repetitive way, such as the frequent use of 'before' and 'now'. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, making it difficult to follow the transition from one area of the cafe to another. To improve, you should organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific features. Use a wider variety of linking words like 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'furthermore' to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely on basic descriptors like 'large', 'different', and 'delicious', which do not accurately reflect the formal tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'hustle free environment' (should be 'hassle-free') and 'glorifies it' (which is not appropriate in this context). To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to spatial changes, such as 'expanded', 'relocated', 'converted', or 'integrated', and avoid informal or subjective language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. There are frequent issues with punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas and periods, and inconsistent capitalization at the start of sentences. You rely mostly on simple sentence structures, and there are errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the space carried by recycling bin' (should be 'the space occupied by the recycling bin'). To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for punctuation and capitalization. Incorporating more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, would also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
