Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given maps shows the earlier and current design of the college's cafe.
Overall, the cafe has undergone a significant redevelopment, with many original features being removed, replaced and redesigned. The outdoor seating has been expanded, some new sections like takeaway, coffee bar, salad bar barbecue have been introduced.
Earlier the cafe was simple with minimal facilities. The cafe included Toilets, single serving area for all food and drinks, staff dining room and lastly, only indoor seating available. Further, there was only a single entrance door to the cafe from the eastern side.
In comparison to the old plan, the redesigned cafe is quite big and has introduced new spaces. The kitchen now serves only hot meals in kitchen and there is a separate counter for takeaway food and coffee. Salad bar, barbecue and the outdoor seating are the new launches of the cafe. Further, now there are three entrances to the cafe. Staff dining room is the only thing that was available in the old plan but not in the current cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, including the expansion of seating and the addition of new facilities like the salad bar and coffee bar. You have provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the two plans. However, the report could be improved by being more precise with spatial descriptions; for instance, mentioning the specific locations of the new entrances or the kitchen would provide a more comprehensive summary. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, and the information is logically selected to highlight the most significant changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the 'before' and 'after' states. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In comparison to the old plan' and 'Further', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined to ensure a smoother flow between the description of the old layout and the new additions. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the kitchen's function and the new counters could be more explicitly linked.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'redevelopment', 'minimal facilities', and 'redesigned'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'new launches of the cafe', which is not the most natural collocation for physical features. Additionally, the phrasing 'quite big' is somewhat informal for an academic report. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to architectural changes or spatial layout, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', or 'integrated'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('The given maps shows') and missing articles ('included Toilets', 'in kitchen'). Punctuation is generally adequate, but there are some awkward phrasings that affect the overall fluency. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors like pluralization and article usage, and aim to vary your sentence structure further by using more sophisticated subordinating conjunctions.
