The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate the design of a college cafe in the present time and before it was redesigned. Overall, there is some additions of outdoor seating and serving area, while staff dining rooms were repurposed as another serving area.

Prior to the redesign, the cafe was an indoor-only venue. The main hall was a large space filled with tables and chairs, two staff dining rooms, toilets. There was also a trash bin located near the entrance and exit. A separate area connected to the main hall via a door was for the kitchen and its serving area, which served all food and drink in one place.

Post redesigning, the cafe has outdoor area used for outdoor seating and barbecue station. It is located to the left of the main hall entrance and is accessible through two new doors, one near the toilet and the other at the back of the hall. More serving area are being introduced, each serving different meals or beverages. A new salad bar available at the back of the hall, meanwhile the serving area located near the kitchen now only serving hot meals. Additionally, the staff dining rooms are now used for take away food station and coffee bar. The single trash bin is also replaced by recycling bins to promote eco-friendlier waste management.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively summarizes the key changes between the two plans. You have identified the main features, such as the addition of outdoor seating, the repurposing of staff rooms, and the expansion of serving areas. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. You have also made relevant comparisons, such as noting the shift from an indoor-only venue to one with outdoor facilities and the change in waste management. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, clarifying the exact location of the new salad bar relative to the kitchen would further enhance the clarity of your report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a description of the 'before' state, and a detailed account of the 'after' state. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct phases. You use cohesive devices such as 'Prior to', 'Post redesigning', 'meanwhile', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader through the information. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'repurposed', 'accessible', and 'eco-friendlier'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'there is some additions' (should be 'there are some additions') and 'Post redesigning' (which is slightly unnatural; 'Following the redesign' would be better). You attempt to use specific terminology related to the cafe layout, which is appropriate for this task. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure subject-verb agreement when using plural nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'More serving area are being introduced' should be 'More serving areas are being introduced', and 'the serving area... now only serving hot meals' lacks a finite verb ('is now only serving'). Additionally, 'there is some additions' contains a subject-verb agreement error. Despite these slips, your control of grammar is generally good, and these errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate the score.
