The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The layouts illustrate the design of an old college cafe which is redesigned now with newer amenities and increased surface area.

Overall, the most significant change in the plan is done by adding a barbecue stand and a specific location for outdoor seating. Additionally, a salad bar is newly introduced near to the kitchen and a small bin is now converted into recycling bins. Further, new services for take away food and coffee bar are now open.

To be specific, the old cafe had small layout with one entry/exit. However, today's cafe has two more gates and also a sitting area outside it attached with barbecue. Moreover, the place of staff dining rooms is now being used as take away food and as a coffee bar. Likewise, a salad bar is now open near the kitchen and a small bin is now converted into many recycling bins. Furthermore, the serving area near kitchen which was used for serving all the foods and drinks is now used for serving hot meals only.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the barbecue area, the salad bar, and the changes to the serving area. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the diagrams. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies; for example, you mentioned the staff dining room was replaced by a takeaway/coffee bar, but the plan shows the staff room was removed to accommodate the new layout, not necessarily replaced by those specific services. Additionally, ensure you clearly distinguish between the 'before' and 'after' states to avoid any ambiguity in your reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph detailing specific changes. You used cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Further,' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by separating the specific changes into two distinct paragraphs rather than grouping them all under one 'To be specific' section. The progression of information is generally clear, but the flow could be smoother with more varied linking phrases that connect the 'before' and 'after' states more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'amenities,' 'redesigned,' and 'converted.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'most significant change in the plan is done by adding,' which is slightly unnatural. Using 'is achieved by' or 'involves' would be more precise. You also used 'small layout' instead of 'small floor plan' or 'limited space.' While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the old cafe had small layout' (missing an article) and 'sitting area outside it attached with barbecue' (awkward phrasing). You also have some issues with tense consistency and preposition usage, such as 'near to the kitchen' (should be 'near the kitchen'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and more accurate prepositional phrases will improve your accuracy.
