The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The supplied maps compare the current layout of a college cafe after a redesign with its design before this change.

Overall, it is immediately apparent that a new section of barbecue with outdoor seating has been constructed and staff dining rooms are repurposed into a takeaway and a coffee bar.

Before redesign, the cafe had separate kitchen at the rare side with a serving area for foods and drinks but now the serving region has been reformed into a hot meal section. Likewise, there were dining rooms for staff members along the external wall of kitchen in the main area while toilets were at the opposite corner. The dining rooms are converted into a take away and a coffee bar but toilets are still there. The former bin beside toilets is upgraded to a recycling bin and a salad bar is started with it's opposite wall across tables and chairs. Finally, a new area for barbecue is constructed with five tables of outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the new barbecue area, the conversion of staff rooms, and the modifications to the kitchen and serving areas. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, the response could be improved by grouping the information more logically rather than listing changes sequentially. For instance, you could group all structural changes (the new barbecue area) separately from the internal layout changes (the coffee bar and takeaway). While you have covered the key points, a more analytical approach to comparing the 'before' and 'after' states would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that describe the changes. You use some cohesive devices like 'Likewise' and 'Finally' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the transition between the description of the kitchen area and the new additions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the way information is presented. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'repurposed', 'converted', and 'upgraded' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'rare side' (likely meant 'rear side') and 'started with it's opposite wall' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While you have enough vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language regarding spatial relationships and architectural changes, and ensure that word choices are consistently accurate to avoid minor errors that slightly distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Before redesign' (missing an article: 'Before the redesign'), 'separate kitchen at the rare side' (missing an article), and 'it's opposite wall' (incorrect use of the possessive 'its'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on proofreading for articles, prepositions, and possessive pronouns. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more relative clauses or passive voice constructions to describe the changes, would also help improve your grammatical range.
