The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The 2d floor plans illustrate the original college cafe layout and its improvised plan after reconstruction.

Overall, both plans provide the basic amenities of a semi private kitchen area along with sitting areas. An alloted toilet area can be seen in both plans which remains untouched. However we can see more facilities being added after reconstruction of the cafe and more access to the area through multiple entrances created for easy traffic flow. The dimensions of the kitchen area and toilet remains the same.

The major difference between the two layouts is the additional facilities included and the relocation of the sitting area which was indoor before construction with a dedicated staff dining hall, but after reconstruction, we can see an additional outdoor sitting area for the public and the dedicated staff hall converted to additional facilities. A dedicated salad bar, coffee bar and barbecue area can be seen. The recycling area has been increased and an option for take out is also available in the new plan. Hot meals will be provided according to the new layout which was once a serving area for the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign effectively. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the addition of outdoor seating, the new service areas (salad bar, coffee bar), and the improved traffic flow. However, the description of the 'staff dining hall' is slightly confusing; the plans show the staff room was relocated rather than simply converted. Additionally, while you mention the kitchen dimensions remain the same, you could have provided more specific comparisons regarding the overall footprint or the shift in the cafe's orientation. The overview is clear, but further detail on the specific locations of the new amenities would have strengthened the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, moving from an overview to specific details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general summary from the detailed analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'The major difference', and 'after reconstruction' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the relocation of seating and the new service areas is a bit abrupt. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'amenities', 'reconstruction', 'relocation', and 'traffic flow' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'improvised plan' (which implies a lack of preparation rather than a redesign) and 'alloted' (spelling error). The phrase 'once a serving area' is used correctly, but the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to architectural changes, such as 'layout reconfiguration' or 'spatial expansion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The dimensions of the kitchen area and toilet remains the same' (subject-verb agreement error: 'remain') and 'which was indoor before construction with a dedicated staff dining hall' (which is slightly awkward in structure). Punctuation is generally correct, though some sentences could be tightened for better clarity. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, but the occasional slips prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are the majority.
