The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate information about the layout of a college cafe before redesign and how it looks nowadays after renovation.

Overall, it is clear that many new facilities and sections are added in the new concept and some empty areas are also renovated in effective manner.

Looking first at cafe before redesign, it is evident that in the central hall some tables and chairs were placed along with two staff dining rooms. On the south east corner on the hall toilets were attached for the public usage. Thereafter, in the south west corner one room was present in which kitchen and serving area (all food and drink) was attached.

After renovation huge changes are noticed, in central hall new sections are added and deleted like salad bar and recycling bins are present now and at the place of staff dining rooms, take away food and coffee bar corners are added now. Even though serving area is deleted and hot meals are added at that place. Further, outdoor seating area is also newly added now with some barbecue facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of new facilities like the salad bar and outdoor seating. You also noted the removal of the original kitchen and staff dining rooms. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview that synthesizes the changes effectively. While you mention that 'many new facilities' were added, you could improve by highlighting the shift from a more enclosed, staff-focused layout to a more open, customer-oriented space. The description of the layout is generally accurate, but ensure you clearly distinguish between the 'before' and 'after' states to avoid confusion for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 'before' to the 'after' state. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Thereafter', and 'After renovation'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'now' at the end of sentences. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the description of the central hall and the peripheral areas could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'renovated', 'facilities', and 'layout'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'in effective manner' (should be 'in an effective manner') and 'at the place of' (better expressed as 'in place of' or 'replacing'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more varied verbs to describe spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', or 'relocated', rather than relying on 'added' or 'deleted'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'in the central hall some tables and chairs were placed' is slightly awkward; 'On the south east corner on the hall' should be 'in the south-east corner of the hall'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional phrases.
