Student answer (Band 7.0)
The architectural designs illustrate a college cafe before it was renovated and how it looks now.
Overall, several structures were added to the cafe, some remained relatively unchanged, while others were expanded and renamed. The staff dining rooms were replaced with a takeaway food and coffee bar. Additionally, an outdoor cooking seating area and a barbecue place has been added to the design.
The cafe before the redesign had just few structures, the kitchen was located at the northwest corner of the cafe with serving area just below it, there were also two dining rooms specifically dedicated to the staff, inferior to the dining area was a large area for chairs and tables . The cafe also had a Bin area and toilets at the extreme of the building.
Today, the cafe has been transformed with additional structures added to it. The kitchen, toilets and the area for keeping table and chairs retained its original designs. The serving area was replaced with a place for hot meals, while the dining rooms had been redesigned into a coffee bar and site for takeaway food. A salad bar, a barbecue place and an outdoor seating space has also been added to the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the replacement of staff dining rooms and the addition of new facilities like the salad bar and barbecue area. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the plans. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more explicit comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states rather than just listing features. For instance, you could highlight how the flow of the cafe has changed or how the space has been repurposed to accommodate more customers. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the 'before' and 'after' states. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Today', and 'while' to connect ideas. However, the progression could be smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed. For example, in the third paragraph, the transition between the kitchen location and the dining area could be improved with better linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the information is easy to follow, which supports a clear progression of ideas throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'transformed', 'retained', and 'repurposed'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as using 'inferior to' to describe spatial location, which is not standard in this context; 'adjacent to' or 'below' would be more precise. You also use 'extreme of the building', which is slightly unnatural. While you successfully convey the meaning, incorporating more precise spatial vocabulary (e.g., 'situated in the southern section', 'occupying the central space') would elevate the lexical quality and demonstrate greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'a barbecue place and an outdoor seating space has also been added' should be 'have also been added'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing errors, such as 'had just few structures' (should be 'had just a few structures'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring that plural subjects correctly trigger plural verb forms and refine your use of articles.
