Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE PROVIDED PLANS COMPARE THE LAYOUT OF A COLLEGE CAFE BEFORE AND AFTER A RECENT REDESIGN.

OVERALL, THE CAFE HAS UNDERGONE A SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION, WITH SEVERAL NEW FACILITIES, INCLUDING AN OUTDOOR SEATING AREA ALONG WITH THE BARBECUE, AND SOME NEW FOOD OPTIONS. THE KITCHEN, TOILETS, TABLES AND CHAIRS HAVE REMAINED UNCHANGED.

THE CAFE WAS EXPANDED WITH THE ADDITION OF A NEW OUTDOOR SEATING AREA AT THE FRONT OF THE CAFE WITH SOME BARBECUE FACILITIES IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN CORNER OF THE CAFE, WHILE THE THE KITCHEN, IN THE NORTH-WEST OF SEATING AREA, HAS REMAINED UNCHANGED. THE SERVING AREA, IN FRONT OF THE KITCHEN IN SOUTHERN PART, HAS BEEN CONVERTED INTO A HOT-MEALS.

THE TABLES AND CHAIRS ARE LOCATED BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND THE OUTDOOR SEATING AREA. WHILE A SALAD BAR IS SITUATED ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE CAFE, AN ENLARGED RECYCLING BINS ARE ON THE ESTERN SIDE. TOILETS REMAINED UNCHANGED IN THE SOUTH-ESTERN CORNER OF THE CAFE. IN THE CENTRE OF THIS AREA, AT THE NORHTERN EDGE OF THE CAFE, THERE WERE TWO STAFF DINING ROOMS ADJACENT TO EACH OTHER WHICH ARE REPLACED BY THE TAKEAWAY FOOD AND COFFEE BAR.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, including the expansion of the outdoor area and the replacement of the staff dining rooms. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, there are some inaccuracies in the description of the layout; for instance, the text mentions the kitchen remained unchanged, but the plan shows it was relocated. Additionally, the description of the serving area being converted into 'a hot-meals' is grammatically incomplete and slightly confusing. Overall, the response covers the key information, but more precise attention to the spatial details provided in the diagrams would improve the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location and function. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'in addition to', and 'in the centre of' are used to guide the reader through the changes. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly repetitive use of 'the cafe' and some awkward phrasing in the transition between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different areas of the redesign, which helps the reader follow the comparison effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'undergone a significant expansion', 'converted', and 'adjacent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'an enlarged recycling bins' (should be plural 'enlarged recycling bins' or 'an enlarged recycling area') and 'converted into a hot-meals' (should be 'a hot-meal counter'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication of the visual information.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the the kitchen' (repetition), 'in the north-west of seating area' (missing article), and 'south-estern' (spelling error). The phrase 'an enlarged recycling bins' shows a lack of subject-verb agreement. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall understanding of the report. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on proofreading for minor articles, prepositions, and spelling errors.
