The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrates about the college cafe before and after the renovation.

Overall, after renovation in kitchen there’s a specific corner for hot meals, and converted staff dining rooms into take away food and coffee bar corner. Therefore, recycling bins are added, and there's new salad bar as well as a barbecue area.

Before relocation, in the top west corner there was a kitchen and there was an area for serving all foods and drinks which has been converted into hot meals spot. Moreover, staff dining rooms were converted into take away food and coffee area with the same entrance. Bins were located at very small space which is expanded and recycling bins are placed, whereas toilets are at same place without any changes.

Moreover, there is one new spot opened named salad bar at the west side of the location. Furthermore, the barbecue is made at the south side with outdoor sitting facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe renovation, including the new hot meals area, the conversion of the staff dining room, and the addition of the salad bar and barbecue area. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview. The introduction is slightly inaccurate, referring to 'maps' instead of 'plans'. While the key changes are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more precise. For instance, the description of the kitchen area is somewhat confusing. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most significant changes—such as the expansion of seating or the shift toward a more service-oriented layout—rather than just listing features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the description. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Before relocation, in the top west corner there was a kitchen...'. The progression of information is generally logical, moving from the general overview to specific details. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between the 'before' and 'after' states is more fluidly connected.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of the changes. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'maps' instead of 'plans' and 'relocation' instead of 'renovation'. Phrases like 'hot meals spot' and 'barbecue is made' are functional but lack the precision expected at higher levels. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive structures. To improve, incorporate more precise terminology related to spatial descriptions, such as 'situated', 'adjacent to', 'transformed', or 'reconfigured', to better describe the layout changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The maps illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'after renovation in kitchen' (missing article), and 'toilets are at same place' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to articles ('the', 'a') and subject-verb agreement. Additionally, try to vary sentence structure by using passive voice more effectively to describe the changes, for example: 'The kitchen was converted into...' instead of 'there was a kitchen...'.
