Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes, but it fails to provide a clear, objective summary. Instead of using neutral, analytical language, the student uses subjective and informal phrasing such as 'the cafe is not so good' and 'plan B is better than plan A'. This is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective overview of the data. While the student identifies some features like the barbecue and outdoor seating, the lack of a clear overview and the reliance on personal opinion rather than factual reporting means the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks logical progression and effective paragraphing. The ideas are presented in a repetitive, list-like manner without clear transitions. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'there is' and 'there was'. The lack of proper punctuation, particularly the absence of full stops and the misuse of commas, makes the text difficult to follow. The structure does not facilitate a clear comparison between the two plans, which is a fundamental requirement for this task type.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. The student relies heavily on simple, high-frequency words and phrases like 'not so good', 'make', and 'things'. There is no attempt to use more precise or academic vocabulary related to describing changes, such as 'renovated', 'expanded', 'installed', or 'transformed'. Furthermore, the word choice is often imprecise, such as 'throw out waste material' instead of 'dispose of waste'. The limited range of vocabulary significantly restricts the ability to convey information accurately and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There is a lack of sentence control, with many run-on sentences and missing punctuation. Basic errors in verb tense (e.g., 'before it redesigned' instead of 'before it was redesigned') and subject-verb agreement are common. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive clauses. Complex sentence structures are absent, and the overall lack of control over basic grammar and punctuation makes the text difficult to read and understand.
