Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the redesign, such as the addition of outdoor seating, the barbecue shop, and the conversion of the staff dining room. However, the description is somewhat disjointed and lacks a clear, professional overview. While the main changes are identified, the reporting is often repetitive and lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. The student attempts to compare the 'before' and 'after' states, but the lack of clarity in the structure makes it difficult to follow the progression of changes. To improve, focus on grouping related features logically and using more precise terminology to describe spatial changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'before' and 'after' without smooth transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track which area of the cafe is being discussed. The sentences are often loosely connected, and the overall progression of information feels mechanical rather than fluid. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'subsequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic words like 'look', 'simple', and 'area'. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', 'facelities' instead of 'facilities', and 'tabels' instead of 'tables'. The student struggles to use precise vocabulary to describe the layout or the nature of the changes. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary to include more descriptive and academic terms related to maps and diagrams, and pay closer attention to spelling and accurate word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'many chairs and tabels are stand out side'), tense usage (e.g., 'is start in new cafe'), and sentence structure. Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary commas and run-on sentences. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with errors. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and reducing the frequency of errors that distract the reader from the content.
