Student answer (Band 6.0)

The layouts of college cafeteria has been showing the previous looks and present looks after the redesign.

Overall, main structure of the cafe remain intact but new facilities has been added along with that outdoor seating area has been newly introduced that made the new cafe more specious.

Though new redesigned cafe is L-shaped like before but there are significant internal rearrangements have been made with few necessary facilities. Serving area has been removed entirely from the kitchen space. Instead there is a new take away for area has been developed in the place of staff dining rooms. A coffee bar also placed on the east side of the take away food room.

A salad place has been introduced in the western part of the main rectangular room where indoor seating area and toilets remain same before. Bin area has been expanded with the recycling bins. Furthermore, a barbecue area has been placed outside of the main cafeteria building with outdoor seating area. In southern part of the cafe, two door has been placed to easy access with the outdoor.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the removal of the serving area, the addition of a takeaway counter, and the introduction of outdoor seating. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the structure remains intact, it could more clearly highlight the most significant changes, such as the shift in the kitchen's function. The description of the layout is generally accurate, though some details, such as the 'salad place' and 'coffee bar', are described clearly. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview provides a more comprehensive summary of the transformation rather than just listing individual changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific internal and external changes. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Instead', 'Furthermore', and 'Though', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'take away for area'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'internal rearrangements', 'facilities', and 'rectangular room'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'specious' (likely intended 'spacious') and 'take away for area', which is a collocation error. The range is sufficient to describe the changes, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more accurate collocations and avoiding spelling errors would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('layouts... has been showing', 'structure... remain intact', 'two door has been placed') and article usage errors ('in the place of staff dining rooms'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences and proofreading for basic agreement would be beneficial.
