The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan chart illustrates the changes and new amendments have been done in college cafeteria.

Overall, the cafe area expanded with new additions and rest of it replaced with another facilities such as coffee bar and take away food.

Firstly, in the cooking station, kitchen is on the same place but serving area of any kind of food and beverage replaced with hot meals. In the middle of the cafeteria, there is two sections which was used as staff dining room and then renovated it and change into the take away food and coffee bar.

In addition, the salad bar introduced in the south west side of the cafe but table chairs and toilet are still on same place where it used to be. Moreover, the barbecue is added with extra outdoor seating area which attracts more customers. Just to dispose the waste, area of bins expanded with the new recycling bins on the exact place. Last but not least, new entrances are opened in south side of the map and it is going to be easy for people to access other parts of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the redesign, such as the new coffee bar, the salad bar, and the outdoor seating. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the overall increase in seating capacity or the improved flow of the cafe. While the response identifies specific changes, some descriptions are slightly inaccurate or confusing, such as stating the kitchen is in the same place when the plan shows a reconfiguration. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most striking transformations rather than just listing individual features, and double-check the spatial relationships shown in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Just to dispose the waste' or 'Last but not least'. The referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, 'there is two sections' lacks a clear antecedent. The progression of ideas is generally logical, moving from the kitchen area to the middle and then the outer sections, but the flow between sentences could be smoother with more varied linking words. Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to group related changes.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'renovated', 'amendments', and 'reconfigured' (implied). However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'plan chart' instead of 'floor plan', and 'another facilities' instead of 'other facilities'. The phrase 'table chairs' is also non-standard. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Focusing on more accurate collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('there is two sections') and missing articles ('kitchen is on the same place'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'the cafe area expanded with new additions and rest of it replaced with another facilities'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the response. More attention to basic grammar rules and sentence construction is needed.
