Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate how a college cafe has changed from before to the present day.
Overall, the area has undergone substantial transformation, with several original features replaced or repurposed and new facilities introduced. The most notable developments are concentrated in the south, where seating area has altered the overall layout considerably.
In past, college cafe was largely characterised by limited development. Since then, the area has been considerably redeveloped. Most notably, staff dining rooms, which were originally situated in the north centre, has been demolished and replaced by coffee bar and take away food. serving area has since been converted into hot meals, while salad bar and, entirely absent in the earlier map, has now been introduced in the west.
Further modifications are also evident. Recycling bins has been extended towards the north. Barbecue facility has been established in the south west corner and outdoor seating has been developed in the south. By contrast, toilets has remained unchanged, continuing to occupy its original position in the south-east.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes such as the demolition of the staff dining room and the addition of new facilities like the barbecue area and outdoor seating. However, the report lacks precision in some areas; for instance, you mention the 'serving area' being converted into 'hot meals' without clearly explaining the spatial shift. Additionally, the description of the salad bar is slightly confusing due to grammatical errors. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the original layout to provide a more comprehensive summary of the transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'most notably', 'further modifications', and 'by contrast' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical errors in referencing and article usage. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that the transition between sentences is smoother, avoiding repetitive structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'substantial transformation', 'repurposed', and 'demolished'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and missing articles, such as 'coffee bar and take away food' (should be 'a coffee bar and a takeaway food area') and 'salad bar and, entirely absent'. These errors occasionally hinder the precision of your description. Increasing your use of precise collocations related to spatial changes and ensuring correct article usage will help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'staff dining rooms... has been demolished' (should be 'have been') and 'toilets has remained' (should be 'have remained'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout the text.
