The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps give information about a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks currently.
Overall, it can be seen that the table and chair is situated between the center of both maps, and some new features like take away food, coffee bar, salad bar and recycling bar are added in the current cafe.
Firstly, the tables and chairs are located in the center of cafe, staff dining rooms are above the tables and chairs. However, the kitchen was situated in the north side of the cafe and below the kitchen the serving area (all food & drink) is available. The toilets were had on the southeast side.
Secondly, the tables and chairs have remains same in the current cafe, and some new thing like take away food and coffee bar is situated above the tables and chairs. The serving area (all food and drink) is change into the hot meals, and recycling bar is built front on the salad bar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of new facilities like the coffee bar and recycling area. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While you mention the tables and chairs, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states is slightly confusing due to imprecise language. To improve, ensure you clearly contrast the layout changes rather than just listing features. The overview is present but could be more descriptive regarding the overall transformation of the space.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use transition signals like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the tables and chairs have remains same'. The logical progression is generally sound, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices rather than relying on simple sequencing words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the cafe features effectively. You use specific terms like 'recycling bar' and 'salad bar'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'The toilets were had on the southeast side' and 'is change into the hot meals'. These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs and natural collocations when describing spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the table and chair is situated'), incorrect verb forms ('the toilets were had'), and tense inconsistencies ('is change into'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. You should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing static maps.
