Student answer (Band 7.0)

The map illustrates the changes made to a university café following its recent renovation.

Overall, the layout has been modernized to accommodate more seating and a wider variety of dining options, with several dedicated food stations replacing the older, simpler setup.

In the original design, the central space was dominated by a large dining area filled with tables and chairs. The northern section contained two private dining rooms for staff, while the kitchen and a combined food and drinks counter were situated in the north-west corner. Toilets were located in the south-east corner, directly opposite a single dustbin.

Following the reconstruction, the overall seating area has been expanded, and an outdoor dining area featuring a barbecue corner has been introduced. The former staff dining room have been replaced by a take away food counters and a coffee bar along the northern wall. In addition, the original counter and kitchen area have been reconfigrue into a dedicate hot meals section with a kitchen positioned behind it. Finally, the single dustbin has been upgraded to a set of recycling bins on the western side, while a new salad bar has been installed directly opposite

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all key features of the cafe redesign. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the expansion of the seating area, the introduction of the outdoor space, and the reconfiguration of the kitchen and food stations. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully detailed; for instance, you could explicitly contrast the specific locations of the old and new counters to provide a more comprehensive comparison. Overall, the information is well-selected and accurately reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that separate the 'before' and 'after' states. Cohesive devices such as 'In the original design', 'Following the reconstruction', and 'In addition' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the different areas of the cafe is easy to follow. The structure is clear and supports the overall purpose of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and processes, such as 'modernized', 'reconfiguration', 'dedicated', and 'upgraded'. There are a few minor errors in word formation, such as 'reconfigrue' (reconfigured) and 'take away food counters' (take-away food counter). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to spatial descriptions, such as 'situated in the periphery' or 'occupying the central portion', to further enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'The former staff dining room have been replaced' (should be 'has been replaced') and 'a dedicate hot meals section' (should be 'dedicated'), the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a description of a process or change. The punctuation is generally accurate, aiding the readability of the text. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause confusion.
