Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given plans illustrates a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now. Overall, so many changes were made to both the interiors and exteriors of the cafe. A barbecue station and an outdoor seating is a new addition.
The entrance remains the same. The bin next to the entrance are replaced with recycling bins. Toilets remains the same but an extra door is added beside the toilets for an easy access. However, the staff dining rooms were divided into two separate rooms, one is a coffee bar and the other one is a take away food counter.
The serving area of all foods and drinks by the kitchen is turned into a hot meals section. In addition, to this a new salad bar is set up in the corner of the room. Extra doors were added, which brings you to the outdoor seating with many tables set up. A barbecue counter is also added in a corner beside the entrance of the outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the barbecue station and the reconfiguration of the staff dining area. The overview is clear and identifies the general trend of the changes. However, the report could be improved by more precise comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. For instance, while you mention the staff dining rooms were divided, you could have more explicitly contrasted the original layout with the new one to highlight the scale of the transformation. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, providing a clear summary of the key changes shown in the plans.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary of changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related information, such as the changes to the entrance and toilets in one paragraph and the kitchen and outdoor area in another. Cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'However' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is generally smooth, allowing the reader to follow the changes to the cafe layout without difficulty. The use of referencing is mostly clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'reconfiguration', and 'outdoor seating' appropriately. There is an attempt to use specific terminology related to the layout, such as 'take away food counter' and 'hot meals section'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'The entrance remains the same' (which is accurate but could be more varied) and 'an extra door is added... for an easy access' (the article 'an' is unnecessary here). Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and nouns would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The given plans illustrates' (should be 'illustrate') and 'The bin... are replaced' (should be 'is replaced'). Additionally, 'Toilets remains' should be 'Toilets remain'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The use of punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence structure is clear. To reach a higher band, you should focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles.
