The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two pictures illustrate a college cafe before it was rebuilt and how it presents now.

Overall, a few new features have been added in the cafe now, and some of them are replaced with others. The serving area was replaced by a hot-meal area, and the bin converted into a recycling bin. The outdoor seating and barbecue area are available in the cafe. The salad bar was also introduced after the renovation.

The old cafe included the kitchen, which is still on the same spot after redesigned the cafe, while the serving area for all food and drinks replaced with hot meals. Moreover, the staff dinning rooms converted to take away food and coffee bar, and salad bae also included now.

The bin replaced with recycling bins, and toilets are existing in the same location.

Furthermore, before designing the cafe, the facilities of barbecue and outdoor seating were not existed, but now these amenities are included in the cafe. Additionally, tables and chairs are still holding the same spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the salad bar, recycling bins, and outdoor seating. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview. While you mention that 'a few new features have been added', this is quite generic. A stronger overview would highlight the most significant changes, such as the transformation of the serving area and the expansion of the cafe's footprint to include outdoor amenities. Some details are slightly repetitive, and the description of the kitchen and toilets remaining in the same location is accurate but could be integrated more smoothly into a comparative structure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the progression of information feels a bit mechanical, and some sentences are disjointed. For example, the transition between the kitchen and the staff dining room could be more fluid. Referencing is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be improved by grouping all 'additions' together and all 'modifications' together to create a more logical flow rather than jumping between different areas of the cafe.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the changes (e.g., 'renovation', 'amenities', 'converted'). However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'dinning' instead of 'dining' and 'bae' instead of 'bar'. Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'tables and chairs are still holding the same spot'. Using more precise verbs like 'retained' or 'remained in their original position' would elevate the response. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'before redesigned the cafe' (should be 'before the cafe was redesigned') and 'barbecue and outdoor seating were not existed' (should be 'did not exist'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'the bin replaced with recycling bins' (passive voice needed: 'the bin was replaced'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score.
