Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks today.
There are many counters and facilities added in today's cafe. The structure of cafe is in L shaped. The new outdoor seating area is made.
Before the redesign there where not many facilities, on top-left corner there was a kitchen and under it is a serving area. In the middle of cafe the tables and chairs are placed. There are two staff dining rooms that has separate section. The toilets are at bottom-right corner in both plans.
In today's cafe, the kitchen is at the same place, there are two different section made for hot meals and salad bar. Instead of staff dining rooms the take away food and coffee bar is made. There is a little barbecue section with facility of outdoor seating arrangement is developed. On right side of the corner there is place for recycle bins.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe plans, identifying key changes such as the kitchen, seating, and new facilities. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the shift from staff-focused dining to a more customer-oriented layout. While the response addresses the task, the description of the layout is somewhat disjointed, and the comparison between the two plans could be more analytical. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, concise overview in the introduction that highlights the primary transformation of the space.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 'before' to the 'after' state. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'on top-left corner' and 'in the middle of cafe' are repetitive and lack variety. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, making the flow feel slightly choppy. To reach a higher band, try using a wider range of linking words and referencing expressions to connect ideas more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher score. You rely on basic descriptors like 'many counters' and 'little barbecue section'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'facility of outdoor seating arrangement is developed'. To improve, incorporate more specific terminology related to architectural plans or spatial descriptions, such as 'partitioned', 'reconfigured', 'adjacent to', or 'designated area'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and nouns will help convey the changes more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'there where not many facilities' (spelling/grammar), 'structure of cafe is in L shaped' (article/preposition errors), and 'two staff dining rooms that has separate section' (subject-verb agreement). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and occur throughout the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and consistent tense control will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
