Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is a requirement for a high band score in Task 1. While the information is generally accurate, the description is somewhat repetitive, and the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more effectively integrated rather than listing features in separate paragraphs. The inclusion of specific details like the recycling bin is good, but the overall structure needs a more analytical approach to highlight the transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'now', 'additionally', 'also'). Some sentences are disjointed, and the transition between the description of the old layout and the new one lacks fluidity. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the indoor seating and the new additions could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a logical flow between sentences would enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college' and 'baebeque' instead of 'barbecue'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'changed', 'addition', and 'area'. To achieve a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology related to spatial changes, such as 'converted', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'transformed', and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and word choice to avoid minor errors that occasionally distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Earlier cafe before it redesign, was having', which is syntactically incorrect, and 'barbeque station align on its left', where the verb form is wrong. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of missing capital letters at the start of sentences (e.g., 'also, there has been...'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in tense, word order, and punctuation limit the score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction is needed.
