The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture depicts a plan of a college cafe before and after it was redesigned. The main features in the plan before redesigning were the kitchen, serving area, tables and chairs, toilets, and staff dining room which in the new plan after redesigning has changed a lot with new features adding on such as, take away food, coffee bar, salad bar, barbecue, outdoor seating, and a hot meal bar. All the doors have kept same through both of the plans
There are several major upgrades done to the new plan in the seating area adding a outdoor dining facility, which was only a indoor area in the previous plan. And further the staff dining room in the previous plan has replaced by a take away food and a coffee bar in the new plan. Toilets and the kitchen have been remained same in both of the plans. Moreover the Bins have been replaced by the Recycling bins in the New Plan plus the serving area is replaced by the Hot meals bar in the new plan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the addition of the coffee bar, outdoor seating, and the replacement of the staff dining room. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it lists features rather than synthesising the most significant trends, such as the expansion of dining options and the shift towards a more customer-focused layout. While all parts of the task are addressed, the description of the 'before' and 'after' states is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most striking changes rather than just listing every individual modification.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into two paragraphs, which is acceptable, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The use of cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'And further' is functional but somewhat repetitive. Referencing is sometimes unclear; for example, the phrase 'which in the new plan after redesigning has changed a lot' is clunky and makes the sentence structure difficult to follow. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the general description and the specific details could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. However, there is a lack of variety and precision. Phrases like 'changed a lot' and 'adding a outdoor dining facility' are basic. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'adding on' and 'have been remained same'. To improve, the student should aim to use more precise verbs and nouns related to architectural changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', 'relocated', or 'expanded', rather than relying on simple verbs like 'changed' or 'replaced'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'All the doors have kept same' (should be 'have remained the same'), 'the staff dining room... has replaced by' (passive voice error: 'has been replaced by'), and 'adding a outdoor' (article error: 'an outdoor'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the content, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the accuracy of passive constructions and article usage would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
