The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given map depicts the various changes which took place in college cafe before and after its redesign. It is evident that all changes were made to make this place more organised. This is a gradual process.
To commence with, it is noticeable that first of all kitchen was located in the northern upper left corner, with serving area for all food and drinks below it. Two staff dining rooms were situated in the mid area of the cafe and remaining space was built tables and chairs. However, a bin was placed on the eastern edage side and toilets were placed in the southern corner side.
Moreover, today the kitchen remains unchanged and serving area was converted into the hot meals. Two staff dining rooms have been removed and repalced in the takeaway food counter and a coffee bar. In addition, a salad bar has been stabled in the left side of seating area. The original bin has been changed in the recycled bin. Finally, the cafe now has a large outdoor seating area along the bottom, with several tables and chairs making the cafe more spacious and convenient for customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, serving areas, and the addition of the outdoor seating. You provided a clear comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the overview is slightly weak; stating that changes were made to make the place 'more organised' is a subjective interpretation rather than a summary of the physical changes. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant structural shifts, such as the expansion of seating and the diversification of food service areas, rather than speculating on the intent behind the redesign.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction to the 'before' state and then the 'after' state. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'remaining space was built tables and chairs', which lacks a preposition and clear subject-verb agreement. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking phrases would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesign', 'converted', and 'spacious'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the quality, such as 'edage' (edge), 'repalced' (replaced), and 'stabled' (installed). Additionally, 'mid area' is slightly informal. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing spatial layouts, such as 'central section' instead of 'mid area', and ensure you proofread for common spelling errors to avoid distracting the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, 'remaining space was built tables and chairs' is missing a preposition ('with'), and 'original bin has been changed in the recycled bin' uses the incorrect preposition ('into' or 'to' would be better). There are also issues with article usage and verb forms, such as 'first of all kitchen was located'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help elevate your score.
