The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans shows how a college cafe looked before it was redesigned and how it looks after the changes.
Overall, the cafe has been changed considerably, with some new facilities being added and several old features were removed. The seating area has also been expanded, making the cafe more useful for students.
Before the redesign, there was a kitchen in the upper right corner and a counter was situated near the entrance. Most of the tables and chairs was placed in the middle and left side of the cafe. There was also a small seating space at the bottom, while the overall layout was quite simple and less organised
After the redesign, the cafe become more modern and spacious. More tables and chairs have been added, and some facilities were moved to different locations. A new self-service area was also introduced. In addition, the seating arrangements are more organised than before, which make the cafe more comfortable for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the changes, identifying the main features such as the kitchen, seating, and new facilities. However, the report lacks specific detail regarding the spatial layout. While you mention the kitchen was in the 'upper right corner,' you fail to describe the specific changes to the size or relocation of the kitchen, or the exact nature of the 'new facilities' beyond the self-service area. To achieve a higher band, you should provide more precise comparisons of the dimensions or specific locations of features before and after the redesign, rather than relying on general descriptions like 'more modern' or 'more spacious.'
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the 'before' and 'after' states. Cohesive devices such as 'Before the redesign,' 'After the redesign,' and 'In addition' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the task well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'redesigned,' 'facilities,' 'spacious,' and 'arrangements.' However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There is a reliance on basic descriptors such as 'more' and 'new.' To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to describing maps and plans, such as 'relocated,' 'extended,' 'transformed,' or 'adjacent to.' The current lexical choices are functional but lack the sophistication required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'The plans shows' (subject-verb agreement), 'tables and chairs was' (subject-verb agreement), and 'the cafe become' (tense error). While you attempt some complex structures, the frequency of these basic errors is noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past states versus current states. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple and compound sentences. Increasing the use of passive voice (e.g., 'the kitchen was relocated') would be more appropriate for this type of report.
