The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map elucidate the plans of of a cafe in a college before and after its redesigning.

Taking a general overview, the major changes in the plan is the addition of a barbecue and a outdoor seating. The setting that remained the same was the place of tables and chairs in the middle of the cafe.

It is pellucid that the setting in the most north was changed where all foods and drinks were served is reduced to just serving hot meals. Just beside the serving area, there was staff dinning rooms which was divided into two separate rooms allocated for take away foods and a coffee bar. The new redesigned plan illustrates the addition of a separate salad bar in the west of the cafe in a college.

Moving further, the bins in the previous plan remained at the same place, however, it was made into a recycling bins. The arrangements of the toilets stood at the same area and position. In addition to that, outside the cafe, there is a separate arrangement for barbecue in the south-west corner. The redesigned plan in previous time also demonstrates addition of outdoor seating all over the front of cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the barbecue, salad bar, and outdoor seating. However, the description of the layout changes is sometimes confusing. For instance, the statement that the serving area was 'reduced to just serving hot meals' is not clearly supported by the visual evidence, and the description of the staff dining rooms is imprecise. While the main trends are identified, the report lacks a clear, analytical focus, and some details are slightly inaccurate or poorly described, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Taking a general overview', 'It is pellucid that', and 'Moving further'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the location of features (e.g., 'the setting in the most north'). While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, which limits the effectiveness of the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there is a lack of precision and some awkward word choices. Words like 'pellucid' are used incorrectly in this context, as it is a formal term for 'clear' that does not fit the register of a report. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'the setting in the most north' instead of 'the northern section'. While the student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, the lack of precision and occasional misuse of terms prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The map elucidate' (subject-verb agreement), 'the major changes... is' (subject-verb agreement), and 'the place of tables' (unnatural phrasing). Additionally, there are issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'in the most north' and 'in a college'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from being considered error-free or highly controlled.
