The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given plans illustrates design of college cafe before and after it's redesigning. It compares how much improvement has been done after the it's renovation.
The final plan shows us that, the work was done with so much attention to detail. Even a small change has a huge impact on efficiency and working of the cafe. They utilized the empty space by adding extra sections and seating facilities for people and expanding the bin.
The previous plan had only one compartment through which the food was being served, conversely, after the refurbishment process, they created different compartments according to the type of meals each served, like hot meals are served directly beside the kitchen, they brought up the salad bar inside the cafe and barbeque section beside the doorway near the outdoor seating.
Converting staff dining room into take away food area and a coffee bar, might increase the efficiency of managing the customers while rush hour significantly. Furthermore, the addition of chairs and tables outside the cafe allows the customers to sit if the seating area inside the cafe is full.
In conclusion, the remodeling process increased the capacity of the cafe profoundly. Additionally, having multiple doors for entering and exiting avoids chaos buildup inside the premises and reduces the tedious work of managing the crowd in a room.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by describing the changes between the two plans. However, it lacks a clear overview of the main trends, which is a requirement for Band 7.0+. Instead of summarizing the most significant changes (such as the overall expansion or the reorganization of service areas), the response focuses on subjective commentary like 'the work was done with so much attention to detail.' This is an analytical report, not an opinion piece. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the key features in the introduction or as a separate paragraph, and avoid subjective language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'conversely,' 'furthermore,' and 'in conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some referencing is slightly awkward, such as 'after the it's renovation,' which disrupts the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, though the transition between the description of the layout and the commentary on efficiency could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more precise terminology like 'refurbishment' and 'premises.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'working of the cafe' instead of 'operation' and 'chaos buildup' which is slightly informal. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles and possessives, such as 'illustrates design of college cafe' (missing articles) and 'after the it's renovation' (incorrect usage of 'it's'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when describing specific areas of the cafe.
