The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plan depicts the difference in architecture of a college cafeteria pre and post its redesigning.
Overall, the serving area was earlier concentrated into a single location, which after renovation is segregated into different places based on their categories. The staff dining rooms are removed and a much larger outdoor seating area is introduced.
Originally, the northern part of the cafe was occupied by the kitchen along with the serving section for all foods and refreshments. The main area included the seating arrangements such as the tables and chairs, with a separate section allotted for the staff dinings rooms. A dustbin was located at the east side of the cafe, near the toilets.
After the renovation, the cafeteria now serves only the hot meals near the kitchenette in the northern part. Furthermore, the dining space allocated for the staff members is replaced with the coffee bar and the take away food options. A new salad bar has been introduced in the west side of the cafe. To increase sustainability normal bins near the toilets have been replaced with the ones that are recyclable. The seating area is no longer limited to the indoor space and now includes an outdoor arrangement in the south beside the live barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the cafe redesign. You have successfully identified the major changes, such as the relocation of the kitchen, the introduction of the salad bar, and the addition of the outdoor seating area. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation, and the comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states are accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are fully integrated into the narrative flow rather than listed, and consider using more precise comparative language to highlight the scale of the changes, such as 'expanded' or 'reconfigured'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The report is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. The progression of information is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Originally', and 'After the renovation' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial layout from the redesigned one. The flow is generally smooth, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to avoid a mechanical feel. Overall, the structure supports the reader's understanding of the spatial changes.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing a floor plan, such as 'segregated', 'allotted', 'sustainability', and 'reconfigured'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'architecture of a college cafeteria' (layout or floor plan would be more precise) and 'staff dinings rooms' (should be 'staff dining room'). However, these do not impede communication. The use of topic-specific vocabulary is sufficient to convey the changes clearly. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to spatial design.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the control of tense is consistent when describing the past and present states. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the ones that are recyclable' (which is slightly wordy) and 'the staff dinings rooms' (pluralization error). Punctuation is generally accurate. The range of structures is sufficient for the task, and the errors present are non-systematic and do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
