Student answer (Band 5.0)

As the picture illustrates about the plan that shows a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The kitchen of the cafe before and after the alteration was at the same place in the left side and at the start of the cafe but the serving area after the alteration was changed and it was replaced by staff dinning rooms. after the alteration following the increase in number of students there was outdoor seating area with a barbecue shop. after the alteration there is also a salad bar located inside the cafe which was not present before.

While the tables and chairs area, recycling bin and toilets are still located at the same place before and after alteration.

There is no such changings before and after alteration because the important places like kitchen and toilets that are basic in a cafe is still at the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the kitchen, serving area, and new additions like the salad bar and outdoor seating. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The final paragraph contains a significant error in judgment by stating there are 'no such changings,' which contradicts the evidence provided in the plans and your own earlier descriptions. To reach a higher band, ensure that your summary accurately reflects the extent of the changes shown in the diagrams. The overview is missing; a clear summary of the most significant transformations should be provided at the beginning to better highlight the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive and sometimes mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'after the alteration.' The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the final paragraph feels disconnected from the previous analysis. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and ideas more naturally. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the overall structure guides the reader through the comparison of the two plans effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'at the same place' and 'after the alteration' are used multiple times, which restricts the range of expression. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'staff dinning rooms' (likely meant 'dining') and 'changings' (which is not standard English). To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to describing changes, such as 'relocated,' 'transformed,' 'expanded,' or 'remained unchanged.' Expanding your range of synonyms will help you describe the features of the cafe more accurately and fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('the kitchen... was at the same place') and awkward phrasing ('As the picture illustrates about the plan that shows...'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure or clarity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and then attempt to incorporate more complex structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, to describe the changes. Proofreading for basic errors like 'dinning' versus 'dining' will also help improve your accuracy.
