Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, and the conversion of staff rooms. You have successfully identified the main changes and made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the description of the layout is occasionally confusing, such as the statement that the kitchen is 'outside' the cafe, which might be misinterpreted by the reader. To improve, ensure that spatial descriptions are precise and clearly linked to the provided visual information. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the key trends are clearly highlighted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the past' and 'Today', to signal the shift in time. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by repetitive sentence structures and slightly mechanical transitions. For instance, the transition between the kitchen description and the staff rooms could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally from the previous one would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'undergone', 'infrastructure', 'converted', and 'erected'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'dished' instead of 'served' or 'prepared', and 'sitting area' instead of 'seating area'. Additionally, there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'dinning' instead of 'dining'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to floor plans and architectural features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the kitchen still remain' (subject-verb agreement) and 'One of the staff dinning room' (pluralization). There are also issues with article usage and awkward phrasing, such as 'Hot meals are now only in Only hot meals is now dished'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. Increasing the accuracy of your verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
