Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe renovation, including the addition of new facilities like the salad bar and barbeque area. However, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the expansion of the seating area and the overall increase in capacity. While the key features are identified, the description of the 'before' state is a bit repetitive, and some comparisons between the two plans could be more explicit. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking transformations rather than just listing individual additions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to the 'before' state, the 'after' state, and a brief conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and there is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect the changes described. For example, the transition between the description of the old layout and the new one could be smoother. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the flow of ideas significantly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the changes made to the cafe. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'refurbished of a academic institution' (should be 'refurbishment of an academic institution') and 'change the number of beans' (likely meant 'bins'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. Incorporating more precise terminology related to architectural changes or spatial layout would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'The sets of graph depicts' (subject-verb agreement error), 'In past time' (missing article), and 'design of past cafe are is' (redundant verb usage). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would lead to more accurate and professional-sounding sentences.
