The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

the given diagram shows how the cafe looked before redesigned. and how it looks now.

the cafe firstly had few things like kitchen for both food and drinks, serving area, staff dining rooms, toilets and a lot space for table, a bin and chairs. which is quite unorganised thing because a cafe needs to be organised and should look cool. there should be different different counters for each and every thing.

the cafe today is more organised and have a proper interior. it has kitchen for hot meals at a corner, a coffee bar for drinks, a separate take away food counter beside the coffee bar , a separate counter for salad , washroom and a recycle bins. mainly it has outdoor area too with barbecue and outdoor seating.

as a result, after the redesigned cafe have more seating area then the previous one. they have separate counters for foods and drinks which will help the staff allot by creating less mess.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the changes in the cafe before and after its redesign. However, it lacks a clear organization of the information and does not effectively compare features between the two designs. The use of introductory phrases to indicate comparisons would improve clarity. There’s a need for a more structured overview that highlights key features rather than a list of observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The overall coherence of the text is somewhat hindered by the informal style and simplistic transitions. For example, phrases such as "the cafe firstly had few things" could be improved to enhance clarity. Moreover, the paragraphing is not adequately utilized, which affects the readability of the response. Utilizing clearer numbered or bulleted lists may enhance the organization.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource demonstrates basic vocabulary and limited variety. Words like "organised" and "cool" are too informal for an academic writing task. Additionally, phrases such as "different different counters" could be more succinct. More sophisticated vocabulary choices like "separate" (instead of "different different") or "sophisticated" (instead of "cool") would enhance the lexical quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical accuracy is impacted by awkward phrasing and errors in subject-verb agreement. For example, "the cafe... have" should be "the cafe... has." The response contains minor errors such as run-on sentences and incomplete clauses, which can confuse the reader. Attention to grammatical structures, especially in more complex sentences, would be beneficial for overall clarity and accuracy.

Overall feedback

Your response provides a basic overview of the redesign, but improvements could greatly enhance clarity and sophistication. Focus on structuring your information into clear paragraphs and utilizing more varied vocabulary and formal language. For instance, aiming for a more academic tone would strengthen your response. Also, ensure that you make specific comparisons and contrasts between the designs rather than only listing features. This will demonstrate a better understanding of both the task requirements and the relationships between different elements of the designs. Consider practicing with a clearer structure in mind, possibly using bullet points for features before composing full sentences.
