Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between the two cafe plans, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a logical summary of the main features. While some details are mentioned, such as the kitchen and the addition of a salad bar, the description is fragmented and lacks a professional tone. The information is not presented in a way that allows the reader to easily visualize the changes. The response lacks a clear introduction and a cohesive summary of the key trends or significant transformations, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher in Academic Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the awkward transitions 'To illustrate following' and 'To some up now today'. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the different areas of the cafe. The structure feels disjointed, and the lack of clear signposting between the 'before' and 'after' states hinders the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are several spelling errors, such as 'cofeebar', 'ellaborate', 'somthings', and 'occure'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the spatial changes effectively, relying on basic verbs like 'add' or 'replaced'. There is little evidence of the precise, academic vocabulary required for describing diagrams, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', 'converted', or 'partitioned'. The word choice is often informal and imprecise, which limits the ability to convey information clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are issues with sentence structure, such as 'Kitchen and serving area... are on the left side of staff dining rooms' (missing articles) and 'barbecue contains in the bottom of salad bar' (incorrect verb usage). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage. Complex structures are largely absent or incorrectly formed.
